About the Registan Desert
The Registan is a dune desert in southern Afghanistan, between the Helmand and Arghandab rivers. Its name means “place of sand” in Persian, and shifting dunes driven by the wind gradually advance across the landscape. Hardy nomads graze flocks on its sparse fringes.

Day & night in the Registan Desert
Deserts are famous for their extreme temperature swings. Flip between day and night to feel the difference — these are typical figures for a subtropical desert.
Midday sun
