A horizontal triband of cobalt blue, white and cobalt blue with the national coat of arms centered in the white band. It was adopted in 1912 and reflects the Central American federation colors derived from the former Federal Republic of Central America.

The emblem includes a triangle, five volcanoes, a Phrygian cap, rays and laurel, representing the five Central American nations, liberty and peace.

El Salvador also has a simpler civil flag without the coat of arms, bearing instead the words “DIOS UNION LIBERTAD” in gold.
