A dark blue field crossed by two diverging orange and white stripes rising from the lower hoist to the upper fly, with a large white star in the canton. It was adopted when self-government began in 1979 and retained at independence.

The two diagonal bands are commonly interpreted as the Equator, with the star placed above it because the Marshall Islands lie in the Northern Hemisphere.
