A horizontal tricolour of green, white and red with the red national emblem centered and the takbīr “Allāhu akbar” repeated 22 times along the borders of the white band. The current design was adopted after the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

The phrase ‘Allāhu akbar’ appears 22 times, referring to 22 Bahman in the Iranian calendar, the date of the revolution’s victory.
Did you know?
The pre-1979 lion-and-sun emblem was removed after the revolution and replaced with the present calligraphic emblem in 1980.
